How to read the data
Three ideas cover most of what you will see on this site.
Star ratings
CMS rates hospitals from 1 to 5 stars by combining many measures. More stars means better results on those measures, not that a hospital is right for every patient.
Compared with the nation
Rates are adjusted for how sick patients were, then compared with the national rate. "No different" is the most common result and is not a bad one.
Trends and goal lines
A run chart plots a measure over time. A dashed line marks a goal or the median, so you can tell real, lasting change from normal ups and downs.
